AcronymWHS
DescriptionThe Women's Health Study is a 2 x 2 factorial trial of low-dose aspirin and vitamin E in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. The beta-carotene component of the trial was terminated in 1996 due in part to the lack of an effect of beta-carotene on cancer incidence in the Physicians' Health Study. A total of 39 876 female U.S. health professionals, aged 45 years in 1992 and free from prior myocardial infarction, stroke, transient ischemic attack, and cancer (except nonmelanoma skin cancer) were enrolled and randomized into the study.
